ILTC v USIC 2019 Gengler Cup Match Report

The Gengler Cup Match was held the weekend of August 10/11 2019 at The Tennis Farm (Saturday) and The Toronto, Cricket, Skating and Curling Club on Sunday.

Blessed by good weather, but delayed by confusing instructions on location, six matches were played at the Tennis Farm on Saturday. Playing on grass courts, in a rural environment, was a new experience for both teams as no one had ever played at the site before.  Everyone agreed that it was a location with great character and that the courts were not pristine by any stretch of the imagination but better than expected, with the strong breezes giving almost as much trouble as the irregular bounces. The Canadian team and the US team were matched in numbers, so everyone played two matches in varying combinations.  The US took 2 matches to Canada’s 1 in each round. Anke Magnus and Pam Olley played Louise Gengler Thomas and Sally played a long match with three tiebreakers and match points on both sides to end the day.

Dinner on Saturday evening was held on the balcony of the Toronto Cricket Club. Thanks go to Raj Nagendra and Jenny for ensuring that the menu was so good.

On Sunday morning, bolstered by some new players on the Canadian side, Canada took all three of the matches to take the lead 5-4. Two pro-set matches were then played to determine the tie and as the matches were split int this round, Canada retained the Gengler Cup 6-5.

All in all it was a wonderful weekend, great tennis, fun socializing and new friendships made. Thanks to our US friends, some of whom had come a long way to play, for making the weekend so much fun.

US Team members: Louise Gengler Thomas (captain), Sally Appleby (La Jolla, CA), Lisa Evans, Kim Gleason (Boulder, CO), Wendy Nolan, Jeanne Gengler Swiacki.

Canadian team members:  Pam Olley (Captain), Mary Ann Gaskin, Dale Kozicz, Anke Magnus, Kathy Mueller, Sue Smylie, Alison Taylor, Frances Critchley (guest), Carrie Jackson (guest), Pauline Noteboom (guest), Janet Hofstra (guest).  Supporters (injured) : Sally Coles, Jane Seed.

IC Canada hosted on the weekend August 10 -11, 2019 their friends from USIC. For the first time the matches were played on the grass surface on Tennis Farm, about 80 km northeast of Toronto. On the Canadian side, the players were John Payne, Dennis Ing, Adrian Coles, Daryl Howes-Jones, David Dimmer, Owen Pellew, Fraser MacDonald, Graeme Duff, Rick Howell and Rosti Brankovsky competed against Jeff Snow, Stephen Berliner, Adam Rosen, Howard Berman, John Appleby, Hollis Russell, and Jeremy Jeffery for the Baker Bowl. USIC prevail and won 7-4. Matches were competitive and players displayed behavior worthy IC membership. On the challenging surface they played very good matches without complains about bad bounces, difficulty seeing lines and strong westerly wind. They adjusted their game and often praised their opponents for a great shot.
